Although it's a bit pricier than your basic baby monitor, The Angelcare Movement Sensor With Sound Monitor is a fantastic product, particularly for parents of newborns, preemies and babies at higher risk of SIDS. It can truly be a lifesaver.

This baby monitor has two frequency channels with a 200 foot reception range, and comes with two receivers so you can monitor your baby from two different areas of your home. It has a light display to indicate the sound level in the nursery as well as a low battery indicator. It comes with two a/c adapters and although it does not have a rechargeable battery, it can also be used with four AAA batteries.

In addition to the sound monitor, there is a movement sensor pad which detects even the slightest movement of your baby, including her breathing. This is truly a great feature to have in a baby monitor. There is one mode which beeps with every movement of your baby, although I can't really imagine a practical application for such a feature in a baby monitor.

With the other mode, an alarm sounds if no movement is detected from your baby for twenty seconds or more, giving you peace of mind so you can sleep worry-free. The sensor pad can be used in a traditional or portable crib, or in a bassinet, but should be placed under a piece of ply-wood for cribs with soft or spring bases in order to avoid false alarms. Proper placement of the sensor is also necessary to prevent false alarms when using this baby monitor. Older babies who roll around a lot in their sleep (and hence roll off of the sensor) will also set off false alarms, but the movement sensor, which is less of an issue with older babies, can be shut off when the sound monitor alone would normally suffice.

This baby monitor does cost a bit more than your run-of-the-mill baby monitors, but for peace of mind, this is a great value and a perfect all-in-one solution from your baby's birth to her toddler years.
